Day Laborers Taking On Home Depot Austin day laborers are asking the city to provide what they call a "safe, dignified hiring space" on St. John's Avenue in north Austin. On Thursday, members of the Day Laborers Committee dropped off postcards at City Hall signed by residents of the St. John's neighborhood supporting a designated day labor spot at the area Home Depot store. In July, Home Depot announced that it would follow national policy that does not allow workers on store property. Day labor activists say that move forced workers on to sidewalks and nearby properties, creating traffic hazards. They say the store is an important source of day labor jobs. "It's specifically geared towards construction," said day labor activist Christina Tzintzun, "and so many of the contractors who purchase from Home Depot also pick up day labor there." The Day Laborers Committee is asking city officials to work with Home Depot to come up with a solution. http://www.kxan.com/Global/story.asp?S=4008294
