LABOR IN THE PULPITS
Throughout the city over Labor Day weekend, the worker rights message was heard in places of worship as part of the 1st Annual Religion & Labor Network of Austin’s Labor in the Pulpits program. The program which had its start in Chicago in 1996, has now spread to over 100 cities. The Labor in the Pulpits program is a time to celebrate the bonds that unite people of the faith and labor communities, to honor the workers who inspire us, and to remind faith congregations of the sacred link between faith and work. Ten Austin congregations invited union members, labor rights activists, and immigrant workers to speak during their worship service on Labor Day weekend. Dozens more congregations observed Labor Day weekend by remembering the struggles of working people and re-enforcing their faith’s teachings on social and economic justice. The backgrounds of our Labor Day speakers are diverse, but all share a common vision—justice and dignity for all working women and men. Speakers shared about their own experiences in the workplace; how they connect their work and faith life; what dignity of work can look like; and how they envision faith and labor working together to improve the lives of working people in the Austin area. This event demonstrated a religion and labor partnership that is dedicated to standing with America’s working families and creating a more equitable and just society.
